Pope Leo XIV has accepted the retirement of Bishop Callistus Rubaramira from the pastoral care of Uganda’s Catholic Diocese of Kabale and appointed Mons. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire as his successor.
The latest administrative changes in the East African nation were made public by the Holy See Press Office on Wednesday, July 15, and confirmed in writing by the Apostolic Nunciature in the country.
In his letter announcing the changes, Chargé d’Affaires says, “The Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda has the joy to announce that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop of Kabale Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire, M.Afr. (Missionaries of Africa), until now Rector of St. Martin of Tours Formation House in Ejisu, Ghana.”
“The Holy Father has also accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Kabale presented by Rt. Rev. Callistus Rubaramira, for reaching the age limit, in accordance with Can. 401 §1 of the Code of Canon Law,” Fr. Georges Kwami Kouwonou says.
In the statement, the Apostolic Nunciature congratulates the new Bishop and invokes “abundant blessing upon his pastoral ministry in that local Church.”
The Apostolic Nunciature further expresses its gratitude to Bishop Rubaramira for his generous and dedicated service during the 23 years he has served as the Bishop of Kabale.
According to the statement, the retiring Bishop will remain the Apostolic Administrator of Kabale until the day the new Bishop takes canonical possession of the Diocese.
Born on 3 March 1974, in Kitumba in Uganda's Catholic Diocese of Kabale, the Bishop-elect attended St. Paul's Minor Seminary in Rushoroza before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religious Studies from the Philosophy Centre in Jinja and a Bachelor of Theology from the Institut Catholique in Toulouse, France.
He joined the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) and was ordained a Priest on 10 August 2003.
The holder of a Licentiate in Philosophy from the Milltown Institute of Philosophy in Dublin, Ireland, a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines, and a certificate in Formation of Formators and Spiritual Accompaniment from the Centre Spirituel Jésuite Le Châtelard in Lyon, France, has also undertaken a Biblical Formation Course at St. Anne's Formation Centre in Jerusalem.
As a Missionary of Africa Priest, Mons Bosco has served in various capacities, including Parish Vicar at Nossa Senhora de Fatima Parish in Murraça, Mozambique, Director of the School for Adult Formation in Murraça and Caia,
He has also served as a member of the Council of the Mozambican Section of the Missionaries of Africa, Professor and Dean of Studies at the Lechaptois Formation House in Balaka, Malawi.
Mons. Bosco has also served as delegate for the Protection of Minors for the Malawi Section of the Missionaries of Africa, Interim Rector of the Lechaptois Formation House, Coordinator and Chaplain of the Friends of the Missionaries of Africa in the Philippines.
He has served as rector of the Our Lady of Africa Formation House Seminary in Cebu and as a member of the Council of the Asia Section of the Missionaries of Africa.
Until his appointment as Bishop of Kabale Diocese, he had been serving as Dean of Studies at the Spiritan University College in Ejisu, Ghana, Rector of the St. Martin of Tours Formation House in Ejisu, and a member of the Provincial Council of the Ghana-Nigeria Province of the Missionaries of Africa.

Kabale Diocese was erected on 17th April 1966 being separated from Mbarara Diocese which up to 1956 formed part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Rwenzori. On its inception as diocese, the Most Rev. Kabale Diocese was erected on 17th April 1966 being separated from Mbarara Diocese which up to 1956 formed part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Rwenzori. On its inception as diocese, the Most Rev. Bishop Gervasius Placidus Nkalanga (R.I.P) of Bukoba Diocese, a native of Tanzania was appointed Apostolic Administrator of this newly erected Diocese. Three years later, on August 1, 1969, Rt. Rev. Barnabas R. Halem’Imana (R.I.P) was appointed and consecrated as the first native Residential Bishop. He retired on July 15, 1994 and was succeeded by Bishop Emeritus Robert Mary Gay (M. Afr) (R.I.P) who was first appointed as Apostolic Administrator but was on March 9, 1996 ordained Bishop. He retired in 2003 and was succeeded by the current Bishop, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira. He was ordained Bishop at Rushoroza on June 8, 2003. Kabale is a suffragan Diocese within the Archdiocese of Mbarara since 1999.

A new boys & girl's latrine at St. Kizito
The Rotary Club of Mbarara in partnership with the Rotary Club of Tulare, California, USA has committed UGX 402,765,800 ($131,208) to enhance sanitation and hygiene in Rubuguri Town Council, Kisoro District, through a Rotary Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project. Launched on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at St. Kizito Rubuguri Primary School, the one-year initiative, contracted to Forward Investment Limited, will benefit seven primary and secondary schools in Bukimbiri County near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Additionally, a four-stance water-borne toilet and a water harvesting tank will be constructed at Rubuguri Catholic Parish to recognize the church’s role in promoting education and health.
In addition to funding provided by the Rotary Club of Mbarara and the Tulare Rotary Club, funds were provided by Carmel-by-the-Sea Rotary Club, Rotary Districts 5230 and 9214, and the Rotary Foundation.
